Friday Post: Copyright Notes Vol. 1

Here I will share some notes I have taken while researching information about copyright. The notes here are about the copyright laws of the US and Mexico.

How Long does Copyright Protection last?

This question is important because it will give us the dates in which books currently under protection will be available for all to consume.

Depends on:
  • Date of Publication
  • Whether it has been published or not
Most works created after January 1, 1978 will be under protection for the life of the author and 70 additional years after his death. If the work was made by different authors, time will be counted from the death of the last author.

Anonymous, Pseudonymous, and works for hire, the copyright lasts 95 years from the date of its first publication.

The official website for US copyright laws direct us to chapter 3 of the copyright act. (for questions, it is better to ask a lawyer), as well as this two circulars:
In Mexico, the laws are different. The document will enter the public domain (all copyright disappears) for a century (100 years) after the death of the author, applying to both national and international content.

It seems to us that this law is too large and protests should be made to make it smaller.
